Modeling & Assembly of Simple Eccentric Mechanism using CREO software
Eccentric is a mechanism that converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion, but it
will convert the reciprocating motion into rotary motion. The eccentric is used to operate a slide
valve in the steam engine and to operate small pump plungers. In a steam engine, steam is admitted
into the cylinder and exhausted from the cylinder by the movement of the slide valve.
The eccentric mechanism consists of a sheave and two straps. Sheave is a circular disc with a
stepped rim. The sheave is keyed to the crankshaft. The hole for the crankshaft is placed
eccentrically i.e., this hole is not at the center of the disc. Two semi – Circular straps are fitted
with sheave by means of two bolts. The straps have an annular recess to accommodate the stepped
rim of the sheave. Two brass shims are inserted between the straps. These shims help for the
adjustment of straps for wear.
